swirling flow simulation 2019-02 - Vortex bottle (STEM toy) (With rotation)

Simulation of vortex bottle experiment is carried out in OpenFOAM.

This vortex bottle experiment is inspired by my 4-yr old son STEM experiment. It is interesting to create swirling flow by putting the bottle upside down and rotating it for a few times. A 4-yr old kid can carry out this experiment without difficulty, however, it takes considerable effort to repeat this experiment in CFD.

Swirling flow with stable air core has engineering importance to drainage design. In Hong Kong, vortex intakes are used to convey stormwater from ground surface to deep drainage tunnel. Air core in the middle of vortex flow allows air which is brought down by the flow to escape back to the atmosphere in steady and stable way. So, a stable vortex flow can form.

It is interesting to repeat this experiment without rotating the bottle. It is hopefully able to see slow and unstable flow down the bottle.
