openfoam gui 2018-08 - Hydraulic energy dissipation by DSD backdrop manhole

Drainage Services Department (DSD) type 3 backdrop manhole is commonly used in drainage and sewerage system in HK. This backdrop manhole consists of a vertical downpipe and a 400mm square opening opposite to the inlet pipe. I have been curious about the function of this square opening, and this simulation result gives me hint. The type 2 backdrop manhole is added to make the simulation more funny.

Simulation of DSD type 2 and type 3 backdrop manholes by OpenFOAM under the following conditions:

For DSD Type 2 backdrop (DSD drawing no. DS1019C). The following parameters are used:
- Height of drop = 3m
- Inlet pipe = 600mm dia
- Inlet velocity = 2.5m/s (full bore)

For DSD Type 3 backdrop (DSD drawing no. DS1020D). The following parameters are used:
- Height of drop = 3m
- Inlet pipe = 450mm dia
- Inlet velocity = 2.5m/s (full bore)
- Downpipe = 300mm dia
