openfoam gui 2017-05 - FHWA side-tapered culvert inlet

Simulation of side-tapered culvert inlet by OpenFOAM under the following conditions.
- Q = 14.63m3/s
- Pipe diameter (D) = 1.725m
- Pipe gradient = 1 in 17
- Side-tapered (1 to 6), face width = 2.65m and face height = 1.1D

According to FHWA HY-8, it should be inlet control at throat, but results from OpenFOAM indicates transition from throat control (USGS flow type 5) to outlet control (type 6). One possible explanation for the different control mechanisms can be found in "USGS Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4037" Section 4.2.3. It is written that transition from type 5 flow to full-barrel flow is possible due to restricted air circulation above water surface. Email has been sent to FHWA for some discussions.
